Some of those lessons came from investing in education and learning from people who were further along than me. Others? Well, let’s just say I learned them the hard way. 😂
In this episode, I’m sharing 10 of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the last decade as a wedding filmmaker, and the things I wish I had known sooner!
We’re talking about everything from staying motivated during editing season and building a team to the importance of marketing, reinvesting in your business, creating an incredible client experience, and why being the most talented photographer or filmmaker in the room DOESN’T always mean you’ll be the most successful.
Because here’s what I’ve learned after a decade in business: Talent will only get you so far. The way you show up, the relationships you build, and the effort you’re willing to put into growing your business matter just as much.
Whether you’re a wedding photographer or videographer looking to book more weddings, increase your revenue, or simply build a more profitable and sustainable business, I hope these lessons help you skip a few of the mistakes I made along the way.
Let’s get into it! 🎧

Ten years in the wedding industry. Over 100 couples served. More than $1 million in wedding revenue. And a whole lot of lessons learned along the way.
When I think back on the last decade of my career as a wedding filmmaker, there are SO many things I wish I could go back and tell myself.
Some lessons came from investing in education, learning from mentors, and surrounding myself with people who were further along than me. Others? Well, let’s just say I learned those the expensive way. 😂

But one thing I know for sure is that building a successful wedding photography or videography business takes a whole lot more than being talented at your craft.
And I think that’s something we don’t talk about enough.
We spend so much time obsessing over our portfolios, the latest camera gear, and creating beautiful work that sometimes we forget we’re running an actual BUSINESS.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that where your attention goes, money flows. And sometimes that money is flowing into your business, while other times it’s flowing right out of it.
Think about how much time we spend researching new equipment, tweaking our websites, or getting caught up in the day-to-day tasks of running a business. Meanwhile, the things that could actually move the needle, like marketing, building relationships, and getting in front of potential clients, end up taking a backseat.
If you want more bookings, you need more visibility.
It’s really that simple.

Another lesson? The little things matter more than you might think.
How you show up on a wedding day. How prepared you are. How you treat the planner, the catering team, and everyone else working alongside you.
Because here’s something I believe with my whole heart: A photographer or filmmaker who is kind, professional, and a team player will get the referral over someone who is incredibly talented but difficult to work with.
Your work might get you noticed, but your reputation is what keeps people coming back.

And then there’s the business side of things.
Learning when to outsource. Understanding the importance of reinvesting in your business. Recognizing that sometimes spending MORE money on your team or client experience can actually lead to greater profitability in the long run.
These are the decisions that help you build a sustainable wedding business instead of one that leaves you exhausted at the end of every season.
But maybe my biggest takeaway from the last decade is this:
If you put your business on autopilot, you’re going to get autopilot-level results.

Growth requires intention. It requires showing up, staying visible, continuing to learn, and being willing to do things differently when something isn’t working.
And the good news? You don’t have to learn every lesson the hard way.
